Eureka, California – Drivers along Highway 101 and across Lake County could face slick, snow-covered roads within hours as winter weather moves in by 10 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Northern Mendocino Interior, Lake County, Coastal Del Norte, and the Northern Humboldt Coast. Snow is expected above 2,500 feet from 10 p.m. Monday through 4 p.m. Wednesday inland, while coastal communities face hail showers through 7 a.m. Wednesday.
In Lake and Mendocino counties, 4 to 8 inches of snow could accumulate at higher elevations, including Ridgewood Summit and Rattlesnake Summit along Highway 101. Forecasters caution that snow levels may drop lower Tuesday morning, possibly reaching lake level in parts of Lake County. Highway 101 north of Ukiah could see accumulating snow during the Tuesday morning commute.
Along the coast from Crescent City to Eureka, scattered to numerous hail showers may coat roadways with small accumulations. Even brief bursts can quickly turn pavement slick, especially during heavier showers.
Gusts up to 35 mph could knock down small tree branches in higher terrain.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions by calling 511. Advisories remain in effect through Wednesday morning and afternoon, and updates are likely if snow levels fall lower than expected.
