Lake County, MI – A School Resource Officer (SRO) at Baldwin Community Schools has come under fire after a photo surfaced showing her releasing a child from handcuffs. The image, shared on social media, was labeled with false context, sparking online controversy.
According to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the child was visibly upset, throwing objects at staff despite de-escalation attempts. The officer used handcuffs when the child posed an immediate danger to herself and others. The handcuffs were reportedly the safest option available at the time.
Sheriff Rich Martin defended the officer’s actions, emphasizing that she acted to prevent harm and ensure safety. He also urged the public to remember the SRO’s years of dedicated service to Baldwin Community Schools. Martin reaffirmed that the officer followed procedures and stood by her decision.
The sheriff expressed confidence in the SRO’s abilities, noting that she helps foster a safe environment for both students and staff.
