Gary, Ind. – Heavy rain is swamping parts of Lake and Porter counties this afternoon, prompting a Flood Advisory that will remain in effect until 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Urban neighborhoods and low-lying roads could see water pooling quickly as thunderstorms continue to dump rain across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, Doppler radar detected rainfall rates approaching 2 inches per hour late Tuesday afternoon, with the heaviest storms stretching from Gary to Merrillville. Rain gauges show up to 1 inch already on the ground, and additional downpours are possible through early evening.

Communities most at risk include Gary, Hammond, Merrillville, Portage, East Chicago, Schererville, and Crown Point, along with nearby suburbs such as Lansing, Lynwood, and Munster. Drivers should avoid flooded streets, as even shallow water can stall vehicles and hide road hazards.

Localized flooding is most likely in poor-drainage areas and underpasses. Residents are urged to move valuables off basement floors, monitor local alerts, and keep children away from rising waters.

The advisory will be updated if flooding worsens or persists into the night.
