Lake County, Indiana – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Lake County and Porter County as forecasters warn of a potentially significant lake-effect snow event expected to impact northwest Indiana from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon, according to the Lake County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
The greatest risk for heavy snow accumulations exceeding 6 inches is expected near and north of U.S. Route 30, where persistent lake-effect snow bands may set up. Officials caution that snowfall amounts can vary sharply over short distances, with some locations receiving intense snowfall while nearby areas see minimal accumulation.
An initial round of accumulating snow is possible Friday morning, but emergency managers say the main window for the heaviest snow is expected Friday evening through Saturday morning, coinciding with periods of increased travel. The Friday evening commute could be especially hazardous as snow rates increase and visibility rapidly deteriorates.
During lake-effect events, conditions can change quickly. Motorists traveling along US-30, nearby state routes, and local roads should be prepared for sudden whiteout conditions, snow-covered pavement, and rapidly changing visibility. Brief breaks in snowfall are possible if snow bands shift, but additional bursts of heavy snow may redevelop with little warning.
Emergency officials urge residents to monitor forecasts closely and limit unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snow. Those who must travel should allow extra time, carry winter safety supplies, and check road conditions before departure.
Lake-effect snow events are notoriously difficult to pinpoint, and officials emphasize that forecast confidence will continue to evolve as the storm develops. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued if confidence increases or snowfall rates intensify.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through weather.gov, local emergency alerts, and official county communication channels as conditions develop.
