Lake Station, IN – Drivers in Lake County should prepare for major changes starting this week as bridge reconstruction begins on U.S. 6/State Road 51 over I-94 in Lake Station, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Overnight lane closures on I-94 and alternating lane closures on U.S. 6/S.R. 51 will begin Tuesday, with a new long-term traffic pattern expected to be in place by Friday. Southbound traffic on S.R. 51 will shift to the northbound bridge, now operating as a two-way route while the southbound bridge undergoes demolition and reconstruction.

According to INDOT, two new permanent traffic signals have been installed to facilitate these changes and manage redirected traffic. The ramp from eastbound I-94 to southbound S.R. 51 (Exit 15A) is scheduled to reopen Wednesday, while all four loop ramps at the interchange are set to close permanently or temporarily by Thursday.

The following ramp closures are scheduled:

  • I-94 eastbound to S.R. 51 northbound: Permanently closed. Eastbound traffic must now exit at 15A and use the new signal.
  • I-94 westbound to S.R. 51 southbound: Permanently closed. Westbound traffic will use Exit 15B and the new signal.
  • S.R. 51 northbound to I-94 westbound: Temporarily closed. Detour via I-94 eastbound to S.R. 249.
  • S.R. 51 southbound to I-94 eastbound: Temporarily closed. Use the new signal and alignment to access I-94.

Construction on the southbound bridge is expected to continue through mid-December, with northbound bridge work set for 2026. INDOT advises motorists to expect delays and adjust travel plans accordingly.
