Lake County, IN – An early morning crash on Interstate 65 in Lake County resulted in multiple injuries and significant traffic delays. The accident occurred around 4:16 a.m. CST near the 238-mile marker, close to the Lowell exit, involving three semi-trucks.
According to the Indiana State Police Lowell Post, a 2022 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling north lost control and overturned on the passenger side. This vehicle was then struck by a 2019 Volvo tractor, which was hit by a 2023 Peterbilt tractor, causing a rear-end collision. The crash left one semi rolled on its side in a ditch and the other two disabled with heavy damage.
The driver of the first semi, Ruslan Melnychuk, 47, of Wheeling, Illinois, had exited his vehicle before it was struck again. Melnychuk sustained serious injuries after being hit by the second semi, driven by Adonou Handiou, 66, of Elwood, Indiana. Both drivers were transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Stacy White, 36, of Albany, Georgia, the driver of the third truck, was not injured.
The right lane has remained closed for crash investigation and cleanup, expected to last several hours.
