Hobart, IN – A hazardous house fire overnight at 61st Avenue and Deep River Drive in Hobart displaced two people and posed serious risks to firefighters. The presence of oxygen tanks and ammunition in the home heightened the danger, complicating firefighting efforts and requiring extra caution.
The blaze, which began while crews were handling another fire on Hobart’s northwest side, forced the sole occupant to evacuate. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as firefighters worked carefully to contain the flames without triggering the ammunition or oxygen tanks.
According to the Hobart Fire Department, responders from nearby departments in Gary, Merrillville, Lake Station, and Crown Point were called in for additional support, helping to prevent a potentially explosive situation. The Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced family with temporary relief.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, underscoring the importance of coordinated responses in handling high-risk situations like this. Hobart Police also assisted at the scene, ensuring the area was secured during the emergency response.
