Lake County, Indiana: Fatal New Year’s Eve Semi Crash Closes I-80 Westbound

Lake County, Indiana – A driver was killed early Tuesday after a car collided with a semi on Interstate 80 westbound, shutting down multiple lanes for several hours in Lake County.

According to Indiana State Police at the Lowell Post, troopers responded at approximately 2:30 a.m. to a fatal crash on I-80 westbound at mile marker 8.7 near Grant Street. The collision involved a passenger vehicle and a semi tractor-trailer.

Police said the driver of the car was pronounced deceased at the scene. The semi driver was not injured. No additional information about the victim has been released.

Investigators reported the semi was hauling approximately 40,000 pounds of frozen food at the time of the crash. The circumstances leading up to the collision have not yet been detailed.

As crews worked the scene, the three left westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for about five hours to allow for investigation and cleanup. ISP said the scene was cleared by approximately 7:15 a.m., though significant traffic congestion remained during the morning commute.

Indiana State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dash camera footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact the Lowell Post. Witnesses are asked to call Trooper Hathaway at 219-696-6242.

The crash remains under investigation by Indiana State Police.

I-80 is a critical corridor for commuters and commercial traffic in northwest Indiana, and residual delays were reported even after lanes reopened.
