Lake Station, Ind. – Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along Lake Michigan this week as strong currents and high waves hit Indiana’s shoreline. Waves could build as high as 6 feet, making swimming life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Lake and Porter Counties through Thursday afternoon. Officials warn that rip currents and breaking waves will make it extremely dangerous to enter the water.

Emergency management agencies urge beachgoers to stay out of the lake until conditions improve. Authorities stress that people should also avoid piers, jetties, and breakwalls, where powerful waves can easily knock individuals into the water.

The advisory comes as holiday crowds thin out but late-summer swimmers still visit the shoreline. Local officials remind residents and visitors that even strong swimmers can be swept away by Lake Michigan’s rip currents, which are among the most dangerous in the Great Lakes region.

The Beach Hazards Statement remains in place until Thursday afternoon, and additional alerts may be issued if conditions persist.
