VALPARAISO, Ind. – Northwest Indiana is bracing for a powerful lake-effect snow event late Sunday night through Monday afternoon, one capable of producing thundersnow, whiteout conditions, and over 6 inches of accumulation. The National Weather Service warns that travel could become extremely dangerous along the I-90 and I-94 corridors as intense snow squalls develop early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Sunday night through Monday afternoon for Lake and Porter Counties. Under the most organized snow bands, snowfall rates may exceed 3 inches per hour, creating near-zero visibility and rapidly snow-covered roads.

Strong north winds gusting to 35 mph will worsen conditions, blowing and drifting snow across open areas. Forecasters note the event will feature sharp gradients — heavy snow in Gary or Valparaiso may give way to dry weather just a few miles away. The most intense snowfall is expected from 3 a.m. to noon Monday, coinciding with the morning commute.

Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible, as road crews will struggle to keep up during peak intensity. Even brief exposure outside will be harsh, with biting winds and blowing snow reducing visibility. Power interruptions are also possible where heavy, wet snow accumulates on trees and lines.

The snow bands will weaken Monday afternoon as winds shift, but cold air will linger through midweek, marking the region’s first true taste of winter.
