Crown Point, IN – A Gary man has been charged in a deadly domestic dispute that left a 26-year-old woman dead on November 17, according to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. The shooting occurred inside a residence the pair shared in Gary, where they also lived with their child.
According to prosecutors, Detective Brian McCall of the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force secured murder charges within 48 hours of the incident with assistance from Indiana State Police. Officials allege the shooting followed a domestic dispute and involved a sawed-off shotgun reportedly kept inside the home.
The prosecutor’s office said the accused is a serious violent felon due to a prior robbery conviction out of Cook County, Illinois, and is legally prohibited from possessing any firearms. Records indicate the victim and the accused had a history of domestic issues.
According to investigators, the man is charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon, intimidation and domestic battery. Prosecutors added that felony firearm enhancements could increase potential prison time significantly. If convicted on all counts, he faces an estimated maximum sentence of more than 80 years.
Detective McCall was assisted by multiple agencies, including Indiana State Police, the East Chicago Police Department, Gary Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Prosecutors thanked all agencies involved for rapid coordination in the investigation.
