Lake County, IN – A Chesterton man was killed in a crash on I-80 early Saturday morning. Around 2:30 a.m., troopers were dispatched to a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a box truck on the eastbound lanes near the 8.0 mile marker between Burr and Grant St.

According to Indiana State Police, initial reports indicate that a 2024 Honda Civic rear-ended a box truck at a high rate of speed. Troopers who arrived on the scene, found the driver of the Honda, Corey Stephen Nicholas, 36, unresponsive. Despite efforts by troopers and first responders to render aid, Nicholas was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner. The driver of the truck was unharmed.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the box truck had stopped on the shoulder due to mechanical failure. The driver had placed warning cones behind the truck and was inside the cab when the collision occurred.

An autopsy and toxicology tests are pending further investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team also responded to assist with the investigation. The family of Nicholas has been notified.
