Lake County, IN Homicide: 24-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot in Gary

Gary, IN – A 24-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday night in Gary, prompting a multi-agency homicide investigation, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Officials said Walter A. Wright, 24, of Gary, was identified as the victim after a Medicolegal Death Investigation team responded to Northlake Methodist Hospital around 9:51 p.m. on September 24.

According to the coroner’s release, Wright suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m. by an emergency room physician. His death has been officially ruled a homicide.

An autopsy was performed Thursday morning, September 25, at the Lake County Forensic Center in Crown Point.

The shooting occurred near 2544 Connecticut Street in Gary, authorities said. Investigators have not yet released information on potential suspects or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The Gary Police Department, Gary Fire Department, Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department are all assisting with the case.
