East Chicago, IN – A 17-year-old male was shot and killed Friday in East Chicago, authorities said.
According to the East Chicago Police Department, officers responded to 3701 Dahlia Street at 11:16 p.m. after a ShotSpotter alert detected eight gunshots. Officers searched the area and found an unresponsive male near 3804 Erie Ct. and Commonwealth Ave. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Justin Charleston, 17, of East Chicago. He died from gunshot wounds, and the case was ruled a homicide.
On Saturday, Lake County detectives charged a 16-year-old juvenile with Charleston’s murder. The suspect turned himself in with his attorney. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name.
Multiple agencies, including the Lake County Homicide Task Force, worked to close the case in less than 24 hours. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
