East Chicago, IN – A tense standoff ended peacefully early Saturday after police rescued a 1-year-old from a dangerous situation. Officers responded to a 12:45 a.m. call at a Fir Street apartment involving a suicidal man threatening to harm himself and his child.
The man warned officers he would shoot himself and the child if approached. East Chicago’s SWAT team and negotiators were dispatched to defuse the situation. Police communicated with the man for several hours before he exited the apartment with the child unharmed.
Authorities took the man into custody and transported him to St. Catherine Hospital for a mental evaluation. Inside the apartment, officers recovered two semi-automatic handguns, one equipped with a Glock switch attachment.
The Criminal Investigation Division is handling the case and will continue its investigation once the man is cleared from the hospital. Officials have not released further details.
Police credited their SWAT and uniform patrol teams for their professionalism and teamwork, ensuring no injuries occurred during the incident.
