Crown Point, IN – Commuters in Crown Point began their Sunday with delays and flashing lights after an early-morning crash resulted in an alleged drunk driving arrest around 4:50 a.m. on 93rd Avenue, police said.
According to the Indiana State Police, Trooper Jaylen Holt-Terry was traveling eastbound on 93rd Avenue when a 2017 Cadillac XT5 allegedly lost control while entering the Monroe Street intersection. The vehicle reportedly slid through the intersection and struck the passenger side of the trooper’s fully marked police Charger.
Trooper Jarah Burgin responded to conduct the crash investigation. According to state police, Burgin determined there was probable cause to initiate an Operating While Intoxicated investigation into the Cadillac’s driver, identified as Javan L. Mason, 45, of Crown Point.
Police say a certified chemical test was offered, and Mason allegedly registered a .17% blood alcohol concentration, more than twice Indiana’s legal limit of .08%. He was transported to the Lake County Jail, where he was booked on a preliminary charge of Operating While Intoxicated – Class A Misdemeanor.
Trooper Holt-Terry was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and was later released, authorities said. All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
