Merrillville, IN – A man wanted in connection with a Gary attempted murder case was arrested Monday evening after a crash in the Portillo’s parking lot along U.S. 30 in Merrillville.

According to court documents, Merrillville police responded to the restaurant at 555 E. Lincoln Highway around 6:07 p.m. on October 15, 2025, for a reported vehicle crash. Officers found the driver of a gray Nissan who refused to provide his name and moved suspiciously around the vehicle when questioned.

Police said the man gave officers two false identities — “Remy Dunlap” and “Kendall Gibson” — before admitting his real name as Kevon R. Gibson. A warrant check revealed Gibson was wanted on a Level 1 felony attempted murder charge related to an August 17, 2025, shooting in Gary.

Officers detained Gibson at the scene and later confirmed his identity through state records. He was booked into the Lake County Jail following the arrest.

According to Merrillville Town Court records, new charges were filed October 16, including two counts of false informing (Class B misdemeanors). Gibson also faces pending charges from the August shooting: attempted murder and aggravated battery posing a substantial risk of death.

Authorities have not released additional details on the Gary shooting case.
