Gary, IN – Authorities in Lake County confirmed a homicide investigation is underway after a woman was found fatally shot early Wednesday morning in Gary.
According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, investigators were dispatched around 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2025, to the 3500 block of Oakdale Street in Gary. The victim was identified as 37-year-old Morgan Jefferson.
An autopsy was performed later that morning at the Lake County Forensic Center in Crown Point, confirming the cause of death as gunshot wounds. The death was ruled a homicide. Jefferson’s home address remains unknown, officials said.
The coroner’s investigator certified the death at 7:15 a.m. Multiple agencies are assisting in the investigation, including the Gary Police Department, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department crime scene unit.
No further details on possible suspects or motives have been released at this time.
