Lake County, IN – As holiday travel ramps up, Lake County deputies are launching stepped-up patrols starting November 26 to target impaired and unsafe driving. The enforcement push, part of Indiana’s Safe Family Travel campaign, runs through the end of December and is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).
According to officials, the campaign will emphasize DUI enforcement, aggressive driving, and seat belt compliance. Deputies will operate sobriety checkpoints and conduct saturation patrols across the county to deter unsafe driving behaviors.
“Driving safely is a shared responsibility,” said Sheriff Oscar Martinez. “If you plan to drink, plan a safe ride home with someone who is sober. Never drive impaired in any way.”
Douglas Huntsinger, ICJI’s executive director, added, “We see the consequences of unsafe driving every day.”
Federal data shows alcohol-impaired driving remains a top cause of fatal crashes nationwide—especially during the holidays. Failure to wear a seat belt also continues to rank among the most preventable causes of death on the road.
Motorists are urged to call 911 to report unsafe or impaired drivers. For more safety information, visit www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving.
