St. John, IN – Drivers in northwest Indiana will need to plan alternate routes this fall as a major bridge closure begins this week in St. John.

According to the Lake County Highway Department, the Joliet Street bridge over St. John Ditch, located between Industrial Drive and Hart Street, closed Monday at 6 a.m. The bridge will remain closed through Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 5 p.m., weather permitting, for a full rehabilitation project.

The department has provided detour routes for motorists. Eastbound drivers should take 96th Place south to Route 41, then head south to 109th Avenue, east to Parrish Avenue, and north back to Joliet Street. Westbound drivers should take Parrish Avenue south to 109th Avenue, west to Route 41, and north to Joliet Street. Detour signs have been installed to help drivers navigate the closure.

Officials warned that minor inconveniences may occur during the project but said efforts are being made to minimize disruptions. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, allow extra travel time, and use caution while traveling through the detour routes.

The Lake County Highway Department said drivers should remain alert and avoid distractions when traveling near the construction area.
