Lake County, IL – A Lake County Sheriff’s Office K9 has received new protective gear aimed at enhancing safety during law enforcement operations.
K9 Hemi has been outfitted with a bullet- and stab-resistant vest following a charitable donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides protective equipment to police dogs nationwide. The vest was sponsored and embroidered with the message “In memory of Amy.”
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the donation was announced this week as part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to support active-duty K9 units. The vest is custom-fitted, U.S.-made and certified by the National Institute of Justice, offering protection in high-risk situations.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., founded in 2009, has distributed thousands of protective vests to law enforcement agencies across all 50 states. The organization reports that more than 6,300 vests, valued at nearly $7 million, have been provided through private and corporate donations.
Officials say the program is open to K9s at least 20 months old that are actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. Dogs with expired vests are also eligible for replacement equipment.
Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said the department remains appreciative of continued community and nonprofit support. He noted that all K9 units within the department are now equipped with protective vests, helping ensure safety for both the animals and their handlers.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office currently operates 10 K9 teams that assist with patrol, detection and community safety efforts throughout the county.
Vested Interest in K9s continues to accept donations to fund additional vests and support services for law enforcement agencies nationwide.
