Waukegan, IL — A specialized Lake County law enforcement task force has reportedly dismantled major drug trafficking operations across the region this year, resulting in dozens of arrests, millions of dollars in narcotics seized and the rescue of human trafficking victims.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Special Investigations Group (SIG), a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) funded task force, opened 184 criminal investigations in 2025. Authorities say those investigations allegedly led to the arrests of 100 suspected drug traffickers, gun traffickers and individuals allegedly involved in human trafficking operations.
Officials reported that investigators seized more than $7 million worth of illegal narcotics during the investigations, along with more than 90 illegally possessed firearms. Six victims of human trafficking were also located and connected with support services through partnerships with local social service organizations.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg said the results reflect the ongoing efforts of investigators and partner agencies working to disrupt criminal organizations operating throughout Lake County and nearby communities.
Authorities highlighted several major drug seizures during the year, including more than 50 pounds of powdered fentanyl, more than 37 pounds of cocaine and over 16,000 fentanyl pills. Investigators also reportedly seized 23 pounds of methamphetamine, more than 1,400 grams of heroin and about 2,400 grams of psilocybin mushrooms.
Officials said most of the drug seizures occurred within Lake County, though some were made in neighboring collar counties after investigators allegedly determined the drugs were destined for distribution within the county.
The task force also played a role in identifying human trafficking activity. Investigators allegedly located six victims during the year and worked with partner organizations to connect them with services and support.
SIG operates through a partnership with Chicago HIDTA and includes investigators from federal agencies and multiple Lake County police departments. Participating partners include the DEA, FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, ATF and numerous local police departments across the county.
Officials say the task force will continue focusing on dismantling organized criminal networks through joint investigations, prosecutions and community education efforts.
