Beach Park, IL – A Waukegan man is in critical condition following a three-vehicle crash Thursday evening in Beach Park that sent multiple people, including children, to area hospitals.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 7:35 p.m. Thursday on Lewis Avenue just north of Beach Road. Deputies arrived on scene to find three heavily damaged vehicles and multiple injuries.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Mini Cooper, driven by a 52-year-old Waukegan man, was heading northbound on Lewis Avenue when it allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons. Witnesses reported the Mini Cooper was driving erratically just before the collision.
Authorities said the Mini Cooper collided head-on with a southbound 2004 Buick SUV carrying a 34-year-old Waukegan woman and three children. The impact then caused the Mini Cooper to strike a second southbound vehicle, a 2018 GMC SUV driven by a 48-year-old woman from Zion.
The driver of the Mini Cooper was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, where he remains in critical condition as of Friday morning. The occupants of the Buick and GMC were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team. Officials have not yet released the names of those involved.
