Libertyville, IL – Businesses across Libertyville are being warned today about a scam involving callers impersonating police officers, according to the Libertyville Police Department.
Authorities say the callers claim to be investigating a fraudulent currency case. During these calls, scammers allegedly instruct employees to count cash on hand and bring it to a designated location for “verification.” Police note that the caller ID may be spoofed, making the number appear as if it belongs to the Libertyville Police Department.
According to officials, the Libertyville Police will never request businesses or employees to handle money in this manner. The department urges anyone receiving such a call to hang up immediately and not comply with the request.
Residents and business owners are asked to verify suspicious calls by contacting the Libertyville Police Department directly at (847) 362-8310.
Police are encouraging the community to share this warning with employees and neighboring businesses to help prevent further scams.
This warning comes amid a rise in phone-based fraud schemes targeting small businesses throughout Lake County and surrounding areas.
