Lake County, IL – A Gurnee-area man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly causing several crashes and leading Lake County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase Tuesday evening.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Reno J. Giangiorgi, 34, of the 18500 block of West Judy Drive in unincorporated Gurnee, was charged with aggravated DUI, two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, and multiple traffic infractions. He remains in the Lake County Jail pending a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Authorities said the charges stem from a June 17 incident that began around 5:50 p.m. when deputies responded to reports of two hit-and-run crashes involving a suspected impaired driver in the Grandwood Park area. Witnesses told dispatchers the driver appeared to be bleeding and was operating his vehicle erratically.
Deputies located Giangiorgi’s vehicle shortly after the crashes and attempted a traffic stop. The driver allegedly refused to comply and fled, striking multiple vehicles while leading officers on a chase through several local roads.
At the intersection of Route 21 and Gages Lake Road, Giangiorgi allegedly ran a red light and t-boned a vehicle carrying four people, including two children, all of whom sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One child remains hospitalized but is reportedly improving. The suspect also struck a northbound vehicle before deputies disabled his car using a squad vehicle maneuver.
All injured parties were transported to local hospitals, including the suspect. Investigators from the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the Technical Crash Investigations Team are continuing to review the case. Officials said additional charges are likely.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office has indicated they will file a petition to detain Giangiorgi while he awaits trial. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
