Libertyville, IL – A suspicious package investigation temporarily shut down a busy intersection in Libertyville early Monday after police responded to an unattended suitcase left near gas pumps at a local service station.
According to the Libertyville Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 11:32 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, to the 1200 block of Illinois Route 176 for a report of a suspicious package at a gas station.
Upon arrival, officers located an unattended carry-on suitcase near the gas pumps. Due to the nature of the incident, authorities immediately established a safety perimeter around the area while additional agencies responded to assist with the investigation.
Police also closed the intersection of Illinois Route 176 and Butterfield Road to vehicle traffic as a precaution, causing temporary disruptions for motorists traveling through the area.
Following an investigation and analysis of the suitcase, authorities determined the item did not pose a danger to the public. The roadway was subsequently reopened after the scene was cleared.
The Libertyville Police Department has not released additional details about the unattended suitcase or how long the intersection remained closed. Officials also said there is no further information available at this time.
