Lake County, IL – Illinois health officials are urging pregnant people not to avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol), reaffirming that the medication is safe when used as directed and does not cause autism.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), recent concerns raised at the federal level are not backed by the “full weight of scientific evidence.” State experts emphasize that the science has not changed—acetaminophen remains a recommended option for relieving pain and reducing fever during pregnancy.

Officials warn that untreated fevers can be dangerous for both parent and baby. “Untreated fever in pregnancy is clearly associated with complications and is harmful to the baby,” IDPH said. Pregnant people are encouraged not to “tough it out” but instead use acetaminophen as directed by a healthcare provider.

The Lake County Health Department echoed this message, stating that both children and pregnant people can safely take acetaminophen when needed. Health leaders stress that keeping fevers under control is critical for preventing pregnancy complications.

This clarification comes after mixed messaging on medication safety caused concern among expectant parents. Illinois health officials are working to reassure residents that acetaminophen, when taken properly, is safe and effective.
