Gurnee, IL – A 68-year-old woman is recovering after police say she was allegedly struck in the head with a metal pipe by her son during a domestic incident Saturday evening in Gurnee.

According to the Gurnee Police Department, officers responded around 6 p.m. on September 27 to the 400 block of North Hunt Club Road. The woman sustained a head injury and was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where she is expected to recover.

Police identified the suspect as 45-year-old Maurice L. Freeman of Gurnee. Authorities said Freeman remained inside the apartment following the incident, prompting officers to establish a perimeter and attempt negotiations using verbal commands and K-9 announcements.

Due to Freeman’s active warrant for Failure to Appear and what police described as a history of violence, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was called in. As a precaution, nearby residents were temporarily evacuated.

NIPAS officers entered the apartment and took Freeman into custody without further incident. He was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center for evaluation. Police said an arrest warrant for Aggravated Domestic Battery is being prepared.

“The coordinated response from officers and partnering agencies helped resolve this situation safely and efficiently,” said Deputy Chief Jeremy Gaughan. “We are grateful that no additional injuries occurred.”

Agencies assisting in the response included the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and police departments from Libertyville, Lindenhurst, North Chicago, Round Lake Beach, Round Lake Park, and Round Lake.

The incident remains under investigation.
