Libertyville, IL – A 33-year-old bicyclist from Mundelein suffered critical injuries after a car struck him on Saturday in unincorporated Libertyville. The crash occurred around noon at the intersection of West Rockland Road and the Des Plaines River pedestrian trail.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene to find the man critically injured. Initial findings suggest the cyclist was traveling north on the trail when he attempted to cross West Rockland Road. A westbound Toyota Prius, driven by a 39-year-old man from Gurnee, struck the bicyclist. The impact reportedly threw the cyclist onto the vehicle’s windshield before he fell to the ground.
Emergency responders transported the injured bicyclist to a nearby hospital. Authorities report his injuries as life-threatening. The driver and his young passenger were uninjured in the collision.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Team is actively investigating the circumstances of the accident. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
