Lake County, IL – A multi-county firearms and cocaine trafficking investigation has led to the arrest of a Rosemont man, following a months-long joint effort between the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group and federal agents.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Special Investigations Group (SIG), a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA)-funded task force, worked alongside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Chicago Field Division to investigate Andres Cardenas Guerrero, 26, of the 10400 block of Betty Court in Rosemont.
Investigators allege the probe began in late 2025 after authorities suspected Cardenas Guerrero of selling firearms and cocaine across Cook and Lake Counties. During the investigation, officials say he allegedly sold both cocaine and firearms to undercover SIG detectives on multiple occasions in both counties.
Because the alleged firearm transactions occurred in more than one county, SIG detectives presented the case to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office in early January. A statewide grand jury returned an indictment on January 9, 2026, and an arrest warrant was issued.
On January 15, detectives received information that Cardenas Guerrero was in the Deerfield area. With assistance from the Deerfield Police Department, he was taken into custody in the 0–100 block of Waukegan Road without incident.
Cardenas Guerrero is currently being held in the Lake County Jail. Charges include armed violence, four counts of unlawful delivery of cocaine, and three counts of unlawful delivery of a firearm.
Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said the case highlights the impact of coordinated local and federal enforcement efforts in disrupting illegal gun and drug trafficking. ATF officials echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of removing violent offenders from the community.
A detention hearing is scheduled for this afternoon. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
