Lake County, IL – A Winthrop Harbor man is facing several felony charges today after Zion police say he disregarded a stop sign Monday night, leading to a pursuit, struggle with officers, and the discovery of a loaded handgun.
According to the Zion Police Department, officers observed a black 2024 Hyundai Genesis fail to stop just before 11:18 p.m. on November 17 as it turned southbound onto Lewis Avenue from 13th Street. Police allege the driver, identified as Lorenzo L. Taylor, 22, of the 3600 block of Creekside Ct. in Winthrop Harbor, failed to pull over during a traffic stop attempt. His vehicle was briefly pursued until he pulled into the 2100 block of Bethesda Boulevard.
Police report that Taylor exited the vehicle and allegedly attempted to walk away before briefly struggling with officers, who detained him. According to the department, officers noted signs of impairment, including slurred speech, imbalance, and the odor of alcohol. A search allegedly revealed open alcohol, a small amount of cannabis, and a loaded and chambered SCCY 9mm handgun inside the vehicle.
Taylor refused all field sobriety and chemical testing, police said.
According to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, Taylor was charged with:
• Aggravated DUI (3+ offenses) – Class 4 Felony
• Aggravated DUI (Driving While Revoked for DUI) – Class 4 Felony
• Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon – Class 4 Felony
• DUI – Class A Misdemeanor
• Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer – Class A Misdemeanor
• Additional traffic offenses
Police say Taylor was transported to the Lake County Adult Corrections Center in Waukegan for First Appearance Court. He was later released, as the charges are not detainable under the Illinois SAFE-T Act.
