Waukegan, IL – A Waukegan man was taken into custody Thursday, accused of allegedly selling drugs within 500 feet of an elementary school in Lake County, authorities said.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, detectives from the Special Investigations Group (SIG) — a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) funded task force — arrested Agustin Arias, Jr., 41, of Waukegan, after an undercover operation concluded he was allegedly selling cocaine in the area. Investigators said they began monitoring Arias following reports of narcotics activity on the 900 block of Woodlawn Avenue in Waukegan.

During their operation, undercover detectives allegedly purchased drugs from Arias several times in proximity to an elementary school, according to law enforcement. Arias was taken into custody on Thursday after a traffic stop, authorities stated.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office subsequently approved three counts of delivery of a controlled substance within 500 feet of a school. According to officials, Arias is being held in Lake County Jail after a court-approved petition to detain him pending trial.

Arias’s next court date is scheduled for August 6, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom T020, authorities reported. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
