Round Lake, IL – A Cary man has been charged after allegedly setting a Round Lake home on fire Tuesday afternoon, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

On September 15, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 35300 block of North Summit Place in unincorporated Round Lake for a structure fire. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find the home engulfed in flames, with firefighters arriving moments later to battle the blaze.

According to authorities, a 911 caller reported seeing a man leave the residence with a can of gasoline just before the fire erupted. Deputies later identified the suspect as Robert D. Neumann, 43, of Cary. Investigators allege Neumann poured gasoline at the rear of the home before setting it on fire.

Detectives determined Neumann had been renting space above a detached garage at the property but was not authorized inside the home itself, which was primarily used as a weekend residence.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while working to contain the flames. A search of Neumann’s rental space reportedly uncovered a nearly empty gas can.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges against Neumann, including aggravated arson and residential arson. He remains in custody at the Lake County Jail pending an initial court appearance.

Authorities noted that nobody was inside the home at the time of the fire.
