Round Lake Beach, IL – An hours-long police standoff in Round Lake Beach ended late Thursday night after officers arrested a 35-year-old man accused of barricading himself inside a home with a firearm following a domestic disturbance.
According to the Round Lake Beach Police Department, officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of Beachview Drive at around 3:37 p.m. Thursday for a reported domestic-related altercation. Police said the male involved, identified as Luis Pena, allegedly brandished a firearm during the incident before retreating back inside the home, where another family member was still present.
Officers quickly established a perimeter, evacuated the remaining occupant, and attempted to communicate with Pena, who allegedly refused to exit. Police said nearby road closures—including portions of Cedar Lake Road—were implemented to protect the public.
During the response, officers learned Pena had an active Lake County arrest warrant in an unrelated case. The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was called in to assist with securing the area and attempting to negotiate a surrender.
The standoff stretched more than eight hours before officers took Pena into custody shortly before midnight. Police said no injuries were reported, and the firearm was recovered at the scene.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved charges of:
• Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 3 felony)
• Domestic Battery
Pena is scheduled for a court appearance Friday. Police emphasized this was an isolated domestic-related incident and that no ongoing threat remains for the community.
