Gurnee, IL – A 29-year-old woman from Evanston was killed and three others were injured Sunday night after a head-on collision on Grand Avenue over Interstate 94, according to the Gurnee Police Department.

Authorities said the crash occurred around 8:54 p.m. on November 9 when a westbound 2004 Chevrolet Suburban reportedly struck a patch of ice while changing lanes. The driver lost control, crossed the median, and entered the eastbound lanes, colliding head-on with a 2007 Ford Focus.

The impact sent the Ford Focus off the roadway and into a ditch. Police confirmed the driver of the Focus, a 29-year-old Evanston woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name will be released after family notification by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

A passenger in the Focus — a 29-year-old woman from Waukegan — and her two young children, ages 5 years and 8 months, were taken to a local hospital. Their conditions remain unknown.

The driver and passengers of the Suburban were not injured. A Toyota Highlander traveling nearby sustained a flat tire from debris but no one inside was hurt.

Grand Avenue was closed until approximately 3:30 a.m. Monday as the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) processed the scene. The investigation remains ongoing with assistance from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Libertyville Police Department.
