Crown Point, IN – Downpours across Lake County triggered a flood advisory Tuesday afternoon, as thunderstorms dumped up to two inches of rain in less than an hour, swelling creeks and flooding low-lying streets from Crown Point to Cedar Lake.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the advisory will remain in effect until 5 p.m. CDT for Lake, Jasper, Newton, and Porter counties. Officials warn that heavy rain—possibly up to three inches within 60 minutes—could quickly flood poor drainage areas, overwhelm streams, and create hazardous driving conditions, especially in southern Lake County.
Roads near Valparaiso, Lowell, and Cedar Lake are at risk of minor flooding, and residents in flood-prone neighborhoods should avoid driving through standing water. Emergency managers recommend moving vehicles to higher ground and keeping clear of creeks and storm drains. The Lake County Alert System urges all drivers to turn around if they encounter a flooded roadway.
The advisory may be extended if heavy rain lingers, and residents should check local alerts for updates as the situation develops.
