Lake Charles, Louisiana – Severe thunderstorms could impact parts of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana Saturday afternoon and evening as a storm system moves through the region.

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles says the area is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather on Saturday, meaning scattered severe storms may develop during the afternoon and evening hours.

Cities including Lake Charles, Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, DeRidder, and Leesville could see thunderstorms as the system moves across the region.

Forecasters say the main threats will be damaging wind gusts over 58 mph and large hail, though an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out if stronger storms develop.

Storms are expected to begin developing Saturday afternoon and continue into Saturday evening, with the possibility of lingering rain into early Sunday morning.

In addition to severe storms, meteorologists are also monitoring the risk of localized flooding this weekend.

A stalled front across the region may bring periods of heavy rainfall, with 1 to 2 inches of rain possible across much of the area and isolated totals of 4 to 6 inches in spots.

Because of the potential for heavy rainfall in a short period of time, some areas could experience flash flooding or water covering roads, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same locations.

The flood threat could continue into Sunday, when parts of the region remain under a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware this weekend and monitor the latest forecasts, especially if outdoor activities are planned.

Officials also recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including weather apps, NOAA Weather Radio, or local alerts.

Drivers should remember: If you encounter water covering a roadway, turn around — don’t drown.
