Newark, NJ – The New York City metro area experienced record-breaking heat Saturday, with multiple locations setting new daily temperature highs for September 28, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
According to NWS New York, Newark, New Jersey recorded a high of 89 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 87 set in 2014. LaGuardia Airport in Queens reached 85 degrees, edging past its previous mark of 84 set in both 2014 and 1954. Meanwhile, Islip, New York on Long Island saw a high of 84 degrees, beating its prior record of 80 set in 2015.
Meteorologists note that these preliminary numbers will be confirmed by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). The unusually warm late-September conditions come after several weeks of fluctuating temperatures in the tri-state region.
While the heat is not expected to persist long-term, forecasters say residents may continue to see above-average temperatures into early October. The record warmth underscores ongoing climate variability as summer-like conditions stretch further into the fall season.
