Lafayette, Louisiana – The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued a Flood Warning for the Vermilion River at Lafayette, specifically at the Surrey Street gage, as water levels approach flood stage.

As of 10:15 AM CST Sunday, the river level was measured at 9.6 feet and is forecast to rise to 10.0 feet, which is considered flood stage, later this afternoon. The Flood Warning remains in effect until just after midnight tonight.

At flood stage, minor flooding is expected, particularly impacting Heymann Park near Highway 90, where low-lying areas may become inundated. While widespread damage is not anticipated, residents and visitors should be aware of potential water encroachment in park areas and nearby low spots.

River levels are expected to gradually recede after cresting, with forecasts showing levels dropping to 9.1 feet Monday, 8.5 feet Tuesday, and 8.2 feet by Wednesday, reducing the flooding threat early in the week.

Officials urge the public to remain cautious around swollen waterways and to avoid flooded areas. As always, motorists are reminded to never drive through flooded roadways.
