Ottawa, Illinois – Drivers across La Salle County should prepare for slippery roads and difficult travel conditions Saturday as light snow and intense cold settle into north-central Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for La Salle County. Snowfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 3 inches, with the highest amounts developing near and south of Illinois Route 17. While accumulation may appear manageable, temperatures in the single digits to lower teens will significantly reduce the effectiveness of salt and plowing operations.

Communities including Ottawa, Marseilles, Mendota, Streator, and La Salle are likely to see snow develop during the morning hours and persist into the afternoon. Snow-packed roads, icy intersections, and slick bridges are expected, especially on untreated secondary roads and rural highways.

Transportation officials warn that hazardous driving conditions may develop quickly despite relatively light snowfall. Motorists are urged to slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during the worst conditions. Emergency kits, charged phones, and warm clothing are recommended for anyone who must be on the roads.

Road conditions can be checked through the Illinois Department of Transportation. The advisory is scheduled to expire Saturday evening, but lingering slick spots may continue overnight as temperatures remain well below freezing.
