La Porte County, Indiana – A Greyhound bus traffic stop on I-80/90 led to a drug arrest after a K-9 alert indicated narcotics onboard.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, a Highway Interdiction deputy stopped a Greyhound bus Friday morning, March 27, after observing it allegedly traveling above the speed limit near the 58-mile marker.

The stop was conducted near the 61-mile marker, where deputies deployed a narcotics detection K-9 around the exterior of the bus. The K-9 provided a positive alert for the presence of drugs, prompting deputies to search the cargo area and later board the bus to speak with passengers.

Investigators located a backpack in an upper storage compartment near the front of the bus. The bag was allegedly claimed by 47-year-old Artha Jackson of Chicago. A search of the backpack reportedly revealed a large quantity of illegal drugs.

Jackson was taken into custody and transported to the La Porte County Jail. He is charged with allegedly dealing in cocaine, a Level 2 felony, and dealing in marijuana, a Level 6 felony.

According to officials, Jackson is being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond through La Porte County Circuit Court.

The Sheriff’s Office stated the Highway Interdiction Unit focuses on detecting and disrupting criminal activity along major roadways, including the movement of illegal drugs and weapons.

The investigation remains ongoing. All charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The case may impact interstate commuters using I-80/90, a major corridor for regional travel.
