La Crosse, Wisconsin – A sharp temperature drop is set to follow Tuesday’s mild conditions, with a wintry mix developing by Wednesday afternoon that could create slick roads and disrupt travel across western Wisconsin.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, temperatures will fall from the 50s and 60s Tuesday into the 30s and 40s by Wednesday, with an even colder push arriving Thursday. Rain will transition into a mix of freezing rain and snow beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Thursday evening.
Communities including La Crosse, Eau Claire, Sparta, and Winona will see the greatest impact during the Wednesday night and Thursday morning timeframe, when surface temperatures hover near freezing. Roads such as I-90 and Highway 53 could become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses.
By Thursday, daytime highs may struggle to climb out of the upper 30s to mid-50s, marking a significant shift from earlier spring warmth. Drivers are urged to slow down during mixed precipitation and prepare for changing road conditions.
The wintry mix is expected to taper off by Thursday night, but additional advisories may be issued as temperatures fluctuate and precipitation types change.
