Wisconsin wakes to muted headlights and damp pavement across the Mississippi River Valley as fog and drizzle linger early. The air feels heavy and still, and visibility fades quickly in low spots near the river.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, areas of fog and light drizzle continue this morning, especially before midmorning. Visibility may drop below one mile at times, creating slick conditions on bridges and elevated roadways. Drivers along I-90 and Highway 35 should slow down and allow extra space.

Conditions improve gradually later today as fog thins and temperatures rise into the lower 40s. Roads dry out for many areas, setting up a quieter stretch for travel into Saturday. Clouds linger, but winds stay light and impacts remain limited for much of the day.

Saturday night signals the next change. Rain chances increase late, and moisture spreads back into western Wisconsin. By Sunday, rain becomes more widespread before colder air arrives from the northwest. As temperatures fall, rain may mix with or change to snow during the afternoon and evening.

Winds strengthen Sunday night, with gusts exceeding 30 mph. Blowing snow and sharply falling temperatures may reduce visibility, especially in open areas. By Monday morning, lows drop into the teens, raising the risk of flash freezing where roads remain wet.

Looking ahead to New Year’s week, winter tightens its grip. Colder air stays in place, and snow chances linger into midweek as 2026 approaches. Holiday travelers returning home should prepare for changing road conditions and true winter driving.

Check road conditions before heading out and keep extra layers in the car. Conditions may change quickly once colder air arrives.
