La Crosse, Wisconsin – Travel across western Wisconsin could become increasingly difficult beginning Thursday afternoon as a high-confidence snow event spreads into the La Crosse area, bringing accumulating snowfall and slick road conditions into Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, light snow will move in from the west Thursday afternoon and continue through much of Friday. Forecasters say confidence is high that parts of the region will see accumulating snow, with totals of 3 inches or more possible, especially along and north of Interstate 90.
Snow is expected to fall steadily at times Thursday evening and overnight, increasing the risk for hazardous driving during the Thursday night and Friday morning commutes. Roads that see frequent travel, including I-90, Highway 14, and Highway 16, could become snow-covered, particularly during periods of steadier snowfall. While snow rates are expected to remain mostly light to moderate, impacts may add up over time.
Temperatures will remain cold enough for snow to accumulate efficiently, and blowing snow could briefly reduce visibility in open areas, especially west of the Mississippi River. Forecasters note that small changes in the storm track or snowfall duration could still affect final totals, but confidence in impactful snow remains high.
Residents with travel plans Thursday night or Friday are urged to monitor conditions closely, allow extra time, and be prepared for changing road conditions. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and carry winter safety supplies in case of delays.
Snow is expected to taper later Friday, but lingering slick spots may remain on untreated roads into Friday evening. Additional advisories or winter weather alerts may be issued as the event draws closer. Officials stress that even moderate snowfall can significantly affect travel when it lasts for several hours.
