La Crosse, Wisconsin – A developing winter storm is expected to bring snow and deteriorating travel conditions to western Wisconsin and nearby areas on Sunday into Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, precipitation is expected to begin as rain on Sunday before transitioning to a wintry mix and then snow as colder air moves into the region. Higher snow totals are currently favored across northern portions of the forecast area, while locations farther south may see lighter accumulations.
Forecast graphics from the weather service show a moderate to high probability of at least 2 inches of snow across much of western and central Wisconsin, including La Crosse, Eau Claire, Medford, and Wausau. The probability of 4 inches or more is lower but increases northward, particularly near Eau Claire and Medford, where confidence in accumulating snow is highest.
The storm track remains uncertain, and officials caution that small shifts in the system’s path could significantly change snowfall amounts. In addition to accumulation, strong winds late Sunday night could lead to blowing and drifting snow, especially in open and rural areas, reducing visibility.
The National Weather Service advises residents and travelers to monitor forecast updates closely and prepare for possible winter travel impacts. Those planning to travel Sunday evening or overnight are encouraged to consider leaving earlier or delaying trips to avoid the most hazardous conditions.
