LA CROSSE, WI – Wind-driven snow sweeps across the Mississippi Valley this morning, leaving cars coated in white and roads glazed with ice. Drivers navigating U.S. 53 and I-90 should expect slick bridges, gusty crosswinds, and visibility dropping to near a quarter mile in spots as a Winter Weather Advisory remains active until noon Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, steady snow will taper by midday, but light accumulations of 1–3 inches could still create slick conditions—especially for late-morning travelers. Gusty northwest winds of 20 to 35 mph continue to blow snow around, particularly on open stretches west of the Mississippi River.

By Monday, skies turn partly cloudy before another weak disturbance slides in from the Plains, bringing a chance of light snow late Monday into Tuesday morning. Temperatures will hold near 24°F, but wind chills could fall into the single digits by dawn Tuesday, raising the risk of black ice on untreated roads.

Meteorologists say early signs point to another system developing by Friday, potentially bringing a few inches of accumulating snow as December travel picks up again.

Five-Day Outlook (La Crosse Area)

  • Monday: Mostly cloudy, high 22°F, flurries possible late.

  • Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, high 27°F, slight snow chance.
  • Thursday: Sunny, high near 28°F, low 11°F.
