La Crosse, Wis. – Strong thunderstorms are moving across Wisconsin this evening, bringing the risk of large hail and damaging winds to several communities. Storms are tracking north and northwest and could last until at least 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, the strongest storms may produce hail ranging from quarters to the size of ping-pong balls, along with gusts strong enough to bring down tree limbs or damage property. Localized heavy rain could also lead to ponding on roads, particularly in low-lying areas.
Cities along and north of U.S. Highway 18, including La Crosse, Eau Claire, and Black River Falls, are most at risk. Drivers are urged to use caution on I-90 and surrounding highways as visibility may drop quickly in heavier downpours. Madison and surrounding southern areas may see scattered activity but are not expected to face the same level of severe threat.
Residents are advised to stay indoors when storms approach, secure outdoor items, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Updates and additional warnings may be issued through the evening.
