La Crosse, WI – Residents across western Wisconsin should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures and challenging travel conditions this week. Light snow is expected tonight into Wednesday morning, followed by dangerously cold wind chills as low as -20°F by Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, snow will begin late tonight, with minor accumulations under an inch possible by dawn Wednesday. Strong northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph could create slippery roads, especially during the morning commute. Visibility may also be reduced in blowing snow.

Temperatures will continue to plummet Wednesday, with highs reaching only the teens before dropping to single digits overnight. By Thursday morning, wind chill values will range from -15°F to -20°F, posing a significant risk for frostbite in just 30 minutes of exposure.

Residents should dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit outdoor activity, especially early Thursday. Travel along major routes like I-90 could be hazardous due to icy conditions. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra time, and check for updated road conditions before traveling.

The bitter cold snap will persist into the weekend, with snow chances increasing Friday night into Saturday. Highs will rise slightly into the 30s by Saturday, but travel impacts from mixed precipitation remain likely.
