LA CROSSE, Wis. – A chilly fall night is ahead for central Wisconsin, where a Frost Advisory will bring the first widespread cold of the season. Temperatures are expected to drop into the lower to middle 30s overnight, allowing frost to form in many low-lying areas. Sensitive plants and late-season gardens could be damaged if not covered or brought indoors.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, calm winds and clear skies will enhance cooling overnight, with frost developing mainly between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Friday. The advisory covers much of central Wisconsin, including Clark, Jackson, Wood, and Juneau counties. Pockets of frost are also possible in outlying parts of Monroe and La Crosse counties.

Drivers on rural roads may notice patchy frost on windshields early Friday, though road surfaces should remain dry. Residents are encouraged to protect outdoor vegetation, bring pets inside, and disconnect garden hoses before dawn. Utility providers note this is a typical signal that heating season has begun, with the first extended stretch of 30-degree lows likely next week.

The weekend will bring a return to milder afternoons, but another cold push is expected early next week, potentially marking the region’s first hard freeze.
