La Crosse, Wis. – Cold air settles across Wisconsin tonight, dropping temperatures into the mid-30s in central counties and raising the threat of frost by Thursday morning. Sensitive vegetation could be at risk as the chill grips the region.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, the highest frost potential lies in central and northern Wisconsin, where probabilities range from 30% to more than 60% in cities such as Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids. Areas farther south, including La Crosse and Madison, are expected to remain in the 40s, reducing the likelihood of frost but still signaling a sharp cool-down.
Gardeners are advised to take precautions to protect plants, especially in low-lying areas where temperatures may dip fastest. Covering plants with cloths or moving potted vegetation indoors overnight can reduce damage.
Drivers in rural counties may also encounter patchy frost on windshields by early Thursday, though road impacts are expected to remain minimal.
The cold stretch is brief, with temperatures rebounding into the weekend. However, another round of chilly nights could develop next week if clear skies persist.
